[AFL-Preview] Round 4

AFL PREVIEW 2009

ROUND 4

18/24 = 75%

Going back through last season’s previews I stated that I wouldn’t tip Fremantle again which was a good strategy and one I should have stuck with this season. That tip last week cost me a tipping point and position as tipping ladder leader. The Dorks will win a game or two this season but along with the Demons they will be bottom feeders. Watching them play, even as an observer, your heart is in your mouth as they pile on error after error. Anyway, it does make it easier to tip against them in the future when the difficulty will be to pick them in the games they actually might win.

Another couple of fines for players again touching umpires in the last round where the set fine it seems is $1950 for contact and an extra week for trying to get the umpire’s attention. Shaw is a “touchy / feely” sort of guy so they say, talks with his hands his defence said, well mate I guess it’s time to take the mouthguard out and give the ump a spray, you save a couple of grand and you get to play the next week so long as the coach forgives you for giving away the 50 metre penalty.

Brisbane V Collingwood at the Gabba Friday Night

This is a pretty tough game for the Pies coming off a beating (again) by Geelong last week. While sitting at 1 from 2 is not serious at this stage of the season most experts would have predicted Collingwood might make the top 4 and to prove that they are worthy of the prediction they need to beat some of the so called lesser lights in the competition. While Brown isn’t kicking swags of goals Daniel Bradshaw is performing an admirable foil with 13 from 3 games. Alright, Jonathon has actually kicked 10 as well but it read well as I wrote it. Forwards for Collingwood are hard to find once the opposition can cloak Cloke. Maxwell and Shaw are out for the Magpies, O’Bree plays his 200th and on a positive note, one hopes, the return of Rocca might help take some pressure off other forwards. Medhurst needs to start firing as well. Piehaters will go for the Lions but I wouldn’t like to be sitting watching the game on the box on Friday night having tipped the Lions and hoping they lose.

Sydney V Carlton at the SCG Saturday Arvo

This game is certainly the hardest to pick this week as both teams are coming off a loss, a surprise loss for the Blues whose press precedes them and a disappointing performance by the Swans against a team of about equal ability.

The Fev, the Gibbs, the Murph the Judd

Came back to earth with a shattering thud

The Blues went down to running Dons

Can they overcome the grinding Swans?

Will big bad Barry instil some fears

And beat the Blues like 10 past years?

But many records of which are spoken

History shows they can be broken.

Hawthorn V Port Adelaide at the MCG Saturday Arvo

Port Adelaide is working up a rhythm. Win by 10 goals, lose by 10 goals and win by 10 goals. Guess what’s about to happen this week then? Yep. Power captain Cassisi picked a good game to miss due to suspension.

Adelaide V Geelong at AAMI Saturday Night

The Crows barely beat the Dockers last week so you would need to practice a great leap of faith to think they might beat the Cats even if the game is at AAMI. Adelaide has a young side with what appears to be a bit of talent but the Cats have a talented side all round. If Mick thinks that Geelong at their best is better than the Pies at their best what would coach Craig say? A mediocre Geelong is better than a Crow’s best? You got it.

St Kilda V Fremantle at the Telstra Dome Saturday Night

Goodness me, an easy one to tip.

North Melbourne V Essendon at Telstra Dome Sunday

North Melbourne team, it’s hard to pick ‘em

When players’ hands all smell of chicken

So a win by North will, I think

Be a tipping upset, an unholy stink!

Laidley needs to guard Don’s Matty

So he kicks no goals, sulks, gets ratty.

Hard to rhyme North when you’re in my shoes

I wish they’d  stayed the Kangaroos!!

Still, north will win their case I mount

To open up their points account.

Richmond V Melbourne at MCG Sunday

If you believed the pre-season hype on the Tigers you’re either a paid up member or you tend to believe too much of what you read. There was an interesting comment by Ian Stuart, three time Brownlow winner with St Kilda and Richmond. Firstly, he believes Cousins did the right thing by going to Richmond, Cousins didn’t do the wrong thing with drugs and a few escapades, Cousins shouldn’t have been allowed so much game time, Cousins should not have been asked to go back on in the final quarter, Terry Wallace is doing okay and if the Tigers had the three best coaches ever they could only improve their game by about 10% stating that Richo, at 34, is the Tigers’ best player in the team. Phew! I was nodding my head as I read it too. Melbourne has been pretty ordinary again this season so far and you would have to think it’s not going to get better for them either. At least there was no big hype around their 2009 season aspirations and promises. They said they would finish last and by god they will do as predicted! You gotta love ém for keeping their word. All that aside we will see one of these teams open their premiership points account after this game and I’m thinking Richmond.

West Coast V Western Bulldogs at Subiaco Sunday

Rocket said don’t count last week

When the Eagles play was somewhat bleak

The win by Saints was just some luck

West Coast played with little pluck

At Subi they’re a different team

Play much better, to win they dream.

Rocket needs his bald head read

If he thinks those words fill us with dread

The Bulldogs second trip here west

Will see them winning the contest.

Whoosha steers a shaky ship

And I know who I’ll bloody tip!!
