[AFL-Review] 2009 AFL Team List Changes

Adelaide

Off:

Nathan Bassett - retired

Ken McGregor - retired

Rhett Biglands - retired

Kris Massie - delisted

Luke Jericho - delisted

Bryce Campbell - delisted

On:

Jared Petrenko (Rookie list  / Woodville - West Torrens). Speedy, aggressive rover. No senior games as yet, but featured prominently this pre-season.

Phil Davis (St. Peters College / North Adelaide, draft pick 10). Camrys went deep in a draft they were excited about. Davis was a surprise first-round pick, played with his school mostly so was off the usual radar. He's a versatile tall kid who attacks the ball. Didn't play much in 2008 due to a shoulder injury but did manage three reserves games for North Adelaide. Also portrayed Smallweed in 'Bleak House'.

Shaun McKernan (Tullamarine, draft pick 28). Corey's younger brother (he'd have to be at least ten years younger, eh?) and also an athletic ruckman/forward, takes a grab and has a long kick. Vic Metro's no. 1 ruckman in 2008 and an U18 All-Australian. Hopefully has a bigger heart than bro', for the Camrys' sake.

Rory Sloane (Upwey-Tecoma, draft pick 44). Competitive, aggressive back-flanker with excellent endurance. Won 2008 B&F for TAC Cup club Eastern Ranges and collected TAC Cup coaches' award, suggesting he's a team-man with leadership ability. Camrys tracked him for a couple of years.

Thomas Lee (Claremont, draft pick 60). Quick-leading tall forward who's also a decent kick, they say.

William Young (North Ballarat, draft pick 72). Another tall forward who can take a strong contested grab, also pretty mobile. Played for Vic Country in National U18s, 2008.

Rookie list:

James Moss (Central District). Second year on, no senior games.

Brodie Martin (Sturt). Second year on, no senior games.

Ricky Henderson (Trentham).

Chris Schmidt (Brisbane). Wingman, played 2 games for the Lyin's in 2007.

Brian Donnelly (Louth, Ireland). International rookie.

Brisbane

Off:

Nigel Lappin - retired

Beau McDonald - retired

Anthony Corrie - traded to Collingwood for draft pick 93

Robert Copeland - delisted

Colm Begley - delisted. Drafted by St. Kilda.

Wayde Mills - delisted

Matthew Moody - delisted

Chris Schmidt - delisted. Rookie-drafted by Adelaide.

On:

Scott Clouston (Rookie list / Morningside). Hefty flanker-type promoted following 2 senior games late last year. He can certainly take a grab and has great endurance, they reckon.

Daniel Rich (Sorrento-Duncraig / Subiaco, draft pick 7). The Lyin's also went deep in the draft. Rich is a very good on-baller, was thought to be certain top-3 pick but slipped down after Freo overlooked him for another local boy. Not only has senior (Waffle) experience with Sooby but excelled there, also had a great National U18 series where he led inside-50s with a penetrating left boot and was second in clearances. Ready to play this season, barring injury.

Jack Redden (Glenelg, draft pick 25). Another classy, clearance-winning on-baller - Black and Power aren't getting any younger - with good endurance and also tall enough to take a grab and play in attack. Played for SA in National U18s but his best footy was with Glenelg U19s.

Todd Banfield (Swan Districts, draft pick 41). Another midfielder, with great speed - Rich or Redden feed it out, Banfield bursts clear. Wonder if he's related to old Bear David Banfield?

Aaron Cornelius (Glenorchy, draft pick 57). Tall forward likened to Tiger Jack Riewoldt, another Tasmanian. Cornelius was an U18 All-Australian 2 years ago and was leading goal-kicker for Tassie in 2008 National U18s, also has senior experience with VFL side Tassie Devils. A bargain for pick 57, reckons The Age's draft guru Emma Quayle.

Bart McCulloch (South Launceston, draft pick 69). Very mobile ruckman "who can play as a tall midfielder", says the AFL's promotional guff. Several clubs were interested in him as a late-round pick.

Kieran King (East Fremantle, draft pick 81). Young 17-y-o back-flanker or wingman with pace, likes to run with the ball and "take them on". Decent 400m runner too.

Tom Rockliff (Murray Bushrangers, pre-season draft pick 5).Smart half-forward who led TAC Cup goal-kicking last year with 59, also averaged 23 touches a game in the comp.

Rookie list.

Pat Garner. Second year on.

Pierce Hanley (County Mayo, Ireland). International rookie, second year on. Very good in the IR Series as a defender for Ireland, played 2 senior AFL games.

Joel Tippett (Brisbane). Kept on for second year.

Daniel Murray (East Perth). Ruckman.

Adam Spackman (Morningside).

Daniel Dzufer (Suncoast Lions). On Lyin's rookie list in 2006-7, played one game.

Carlton:

Off:

Jason Saddington - retired

Cain Ackland - delisted

Clint Benjamin - delisted

Luke Blackwell - delisted

Ryan Jackson - delisted

Darren Pfeiffer - demoted to rookie list.

Aisake O'hAilpin - delisted

On:

Robert Warnock (Fremantle). Huge, gangling but very mobile ruckman wanted to leave the Dockers - homesickness, but more game-time was also on his agenda with Freo apparently preferring Bradley. Cost the Bluies two draft-picks but not a first-rounder.

Michael Jamison (Rookie list / North Ballarat). Promising full-back deserved elevation to senior list following 16 senior games last year.

Chris Yarran (Midvale / Swan Districts, draft pick 6). Small forward who bagged 7 goals on senior debut for the Waffle's Swans and went on to top their goal-kicking for 2008 with 39. Elusive with great skills and compared favourably with Hawk Cyril Rioli. Bluies see him as a midfielder in the longer term. "Could be the player of the draft," says Quayle. Impressed in pre-season.

Mitch Robinson (Lauderdale, draft pick 40). Hard-running midfielder who uses the ball smartly. Leapt to prominence in 2008 National U18s, winning Harrison Medal for best player not from Vic, SA or WA. An U18 All-Aussie naturally, also has senior experience with Tassie Devils. Played well, tackling hard, as a small forward in NAB Cup.

Rhys O'Keeffe (North Adelaide, draft pick 65). Back-flanker who had a decent National U18s for SA, the Bloobaggers fell in love with his raking, accurate left boot.

Caleb Tiller (Thornton, draft pick 80). The next few drafts will have first-round picks reserved for the Gold Coast team, prompting several clubs to take young 17-year-olds on potential. Tiller's one of those, a fast-leading forward-flanker type who represented Vic Country at 2008 National U18s.

Chris Johnson (Melbourne, pre-season draft pick 4). Rapidly developing, running half-back or midfielder averaged 20 touches per game in his (injury-restricted) 10 appearances with the Dees last year and looked pretty good; he's played 31 games in 4 years total. Wanted a 2-year contract which the Dees weren't prepared to offer, the Bluies were.

Rookie list

David Ellard (Swan Districts). Second year on, played a game last year.

Aaron Joseph (Glenorchy). Second year on, no senior games.

Lachie Hill (Scotch College). Re-drafted for a second year on.

Sam Jacobs. Ruckman, re-drafted for a third year on.

Jefferey Gartlett (Swan Districts). Back-flanker who impressed in NAB Cup.

Luke Stanton (Northern Knights). Mobile tall kid, highly-rated.

Greg Bentley (Port Adelaide). Small forward played 21 games in 3 seasons with the Flowers.

Darren Pfeiffer.

Collingwood:

Off:

Scott Burns - retired

Shane Wakelin - retired

Ryan Lonie - retired

Rhyce Shaw - traded to Sydney for draft pick 46.

Brodie Holland - delisted

Chris Egan - delisted

Sam Iles - delisted

Toby Thoolen - demoted to rookie list

On:

Anthony Corrie (Brisbane). Very talented wingman or half-forward picked up for a song (pick 93). But he's lazy, doesn't make the most of his gifts. Malthouse needs to fire him up; could be a terrific deal.

Sharrod Wellingham (Rookie list / Perth). Running midfielder with touch of class debuted on Anzac Day last year and went on to play 12 games.

Brent Macaffer (Rookie list / Kilcunda-Bass). Strong-marking forward who won B&F for Collingwood's VFL team in 2008. No senior appearances.

Steele Sidebottom (Congupna, draft pick 11). Great name (nickname - 'Rusty') and a classic Collingwood 6-footer; not too tall, not too quick, but keeps on gettin' the ball. They'll be eager to tell you Sidebottom had 34 touches and kicked 10 goals in the 2008 TAC Cup Grand Final, he's not just a forward but can play anywhere. An U18 All-Aussie in 2008 and looked handy in this years' NAB Cup.

Dayne Beams (Southport, draft pick 29). Prolific midfield 'goer' who averaged 24 disposals per game for Qld in National U18s, plays on-ball and uses the pill with aplomb (Quayle: "His inside work is a delight"). Very decent efforts in NAB Cup.

Jarrad Blight (Swan Districts, draft pick 45). Another midfielder with excellent endurance, also attacks the ball with courage and is tall enough (189 cm) to take a grab.

Sidebottom and Blight - obviously Pies hope the magic name will rub off. (Although Sidebottom 'magic', hmm).

Luke Rounds (Geelong Falcons, draft pick 46). The Pies went for a lotta midfielder types, here's another, athletic and super-quick apparently, can also win the ball and is a decent mark for his size (181 cm). Played for Vic Country in 2008.

Leigh Brown (North Melbourne, draft pick 73). Worried about their relative youth the Pies recycled this mobile but under-performing big man, now at his third club. Brown, aged 26, was the no.5 draft pick in 1999, recruited as a full-back but he's also played in attack, in the ruck and on a wing in his time, and never held down any of those possies. Defence looks his spot here, a Wakelin replacement.

Rookie list

Kevin Dyas (County Armagh, Ireland). International rookie, second year on. No games as yet.

Tristan Francis (Gippsland Power).

Jarryd Blair (Gippsland Power).

Jonny Bennell (Peel Thunder). 'Livewire' small forward.

Toby Thoolen.

Scott Reed (Pennant Hills). Scholarship player.

Lachlan Keeffe (Queensland). Scholarship player.

Essendon:

Off:

Jason Johnson - retired

Adam Ramanauskas - retired

Mal Michael - retired

Damien Peverill - delisted

Courtney Johns - delisted

Tom Hislop - delisted. Drafted by Richmond.

Andrew Lee - delisted

On:

Brent Prismall (Geelong). Good running, attacking half-back who cemented a place in the Cats' line-up following injury to David Wojcinski last year, only to tear a knee ligament himself in the first week of the finals. Prismall wanted to leave Geelong for more opportunities and was a very cheap trade for a third-round pick; recovery from knee reco necessary, though.

Jarrod Atkinson (Rookie list / Rumbalara). Rangy, quick half-back with a penchant for speccies, Atkinson is a late-bloomer who'll be 24 when next season starts. Debuted and played 5 games last year. For a defender, he's pretty loose on his man.

Michael Hurley (Macleod, draft pick 5). Key defender who excels in the contest and is an accomplished spoiler -  lined-up as a Dustin Fletcher replacement. With reddish-blonde hair, he even looks like Dusty. U18 All-Australian for the last two years and won B&F for his TAC Cup club, Northern Knights, in 2008. Looked good in NAB Cup.

David Zaharakis (Marcellin College, draft pick 23). Midfield flying machine with a long kick, Zaharakis also has leadership quality as he co-captained Vic Metro in National U18s, 2008, won All-Australian selection. "A classic modern-day player," said Bomma recruiter Adrian Dodoro.

Michael Still (Northern Knights, draft pick 55). Tall forward with great hands, plucking 83 grabs (25 contested) in the TAC Cup last year and finishing second in the competition goal-kicking with a late surge.

Tyson Slattery (West Adelaide, draft pick 67). No relation to Henry, The Age says Tyson's an athletic, high-marking forward. The AFL's website says he's a running defender. Whatever the case, Slattery is quick and has great endurance, with senior experience in the Snaffle. Dad Wayne played for Sinkilda (and in the Snaffle).

Hayden Skipworth (Bendigo Bombers, pre-season draft pick 3). Bommers wanted an experienced midfielder so they plucked ex-Camry Skipworth from their own VFL affiliate Bendigo. The Crows delisted Skippy two years ago because his kicking was very ordinary. On NAB Cup evidence, it hasn't improved.

Rookie list

Rhys Magin (Zillmere Eagles). Second year on, played 4 senior games last year.

Bryce Carroll (Western Jets).

Tom German (Calder Cannons).

Christian Bock (Woodville-West Torrens). Very skinny brother of Adelaide's Nathan.

Kade Klemke (Murray Bushrangers). Physically mature, smart half-back flanker.

Michael Quinn (Longford, Ireland). International rookie.

Footscray

Off:

Scott West - retired

Andrew McDougall - retired

Farren Ray - traded to St. Kilda, along with draft pick 48, for draft pick 31.

Peter Street - delisted

On:

Ayce Cordy (Geelong Falcons, draft pick 14). Dogs went for big blokes with their limited picks. Ayce (does he have a talking ar5e?) is a father-son draftee - Dad's Brian Cordy - and a whip-thin 202cm ruckman ("the skinniest kid I've ever seen" according to Age journo Emma Quayle) but has exceptional mobility and agility. "He'll be a 200-game player for us," reckoned Eade, before adding senior football was unlikely this season, or at least until Ayce bulks up. Already had a shoulder reco.

Jordan Roughead (Lake Wendouree, draft pick 31). No relation to Hawk Jarryd, as far as I can tell (but there can't be that many Rougheads). Jordan is also a big bloke, a talented tap-ruckman with great mobility and a handy ability to kick goals when shifted forward. Played for Vic Country in 2008 and beat WA star Naitanui in their clash.

Liam Jones (North Hobart / Scotch College, draft pick 32). Strong-marking big man who can play at either end of the ground, but the paper describes him as 'raw'. Impressed on AIS/AFL tour of South Africa in early 2008 but then got injured and missed much of the season.

Rookie list

James Mulligan (Southport). Second year on, no senior games.

Henry White (North Adelaide). Second year on, no senior games.

John Shaw (Sandringham Dragons). Second year on, no senior games.

Jamason Daniel (Murray Bushrangers).

Liam Picken (Williamstown). 22-y-o midfielder, B&F for Willy last year.

Chris Ogle (University of NSW).

Fremantle:

Off:

Peter Bell - retired

Shaun McManus - retired

Jeff Farmer - retired

Heath Black - retired

Matthew Carr - retired

Mark Johnson - retired

Luke Webster - retired

Robert Warnock - traded to Carlton, with draft pick 65, for draft picks 24, 56 and 68.

Josh Carr - delisted (refused new contract). Drafted by Port Adelaide.

On:

Stephen Hill (Quinns Districts / West Perth, draft pick 3). Turnover time for the ageing Shockers as retiring old battlers were all replaced through the draft. A speedy, long-kicking flanker with phenomenal endurance, Hill shot up the rankings after a stellar National U18s for WA and draft camp, where he was top-5 in vertical leap, speed tests and set a 'new record' for agility. Also described as 'chaotic'. Freo surprised by selecting him ahead of another local boy, Daniel Rich, who went to Brisbane.

Hayden Ballantyne (Peel Thunder, draft pick 21). Mature-age draftee (21) and 2008 Sandover Medallist (that's for best player in the Waffle, if you didn't know). He's a small forward who bagged 75 goals for Peel last year, also winning their B&F. A 'Wiz' replacement.

Nick Suban  (Bacchus Marsh, draft pick 24). Feisty rover who uses the ball smartly, U18 All-Australian for the last two years. "More skilful than he looks," reckons Emma Quayle. I'm not sure what that means.

Zachary Clarke (Oakleigh Chargers, draft pick 37). Skinny ruckman (202cm) with big leap who switched from basketball at the start of 2008, also tested well for endurance at draft camp. Played for Vic Metro in National U18s, 2008, but didn't do a lot.

Michael Walters (Midvale / Swan Districts, draft pick 53). Very skilful midfielder or forward, rated a bargain at pick 53. Won best player at National U16 championships in 2007, played in National U18s last year and senior footy with Swans.

Benjamin Bucovaz (Geelong Falcons, draft pick 56). Strongly-built back- or forward-flanker who's an excellent long kick. Was in Vic Country squad for 2008 National U18s but didn't see a lot of action, if his stats (5 disposals per game) mean anything.

Tim Ruffles (North Ballarat City / NSW-ACT Rams, draft pick 68). Described as a 'power athlete', odd for someone who's 66kg. But he must have a lot of them fast-twitch fibres as he's very quick over 20m and has a huge leap. Plays midfield or on a forward flank.

Chris Hall (Flinders Park / Woodville - West Torrens, draft pick 77). Another midfielder to round out the Dokker selections, Hall is a tough rover who seems to have time in possession. Represented SA in National U18s, 2008, averaged 16 touches per game.

Rookie list:

Brent Connolly (Gippsland Power). Second year on.

Luke Pratt (Swan Districts). Second year on.

Casey Sibosado (Oakleigh Chargers). Tall forward was expected to go in 'main' draft.

Matthew DeBoer (Claremont). Highly-rated midfielder.

Hamish Shepheard (East Perth). Tall forward.

Clancee Pearce (Swan Districts). Midfielder.

Jay Van Berlo (West Perth). Camry Nathan's brother.

Greg Broughton (Subiaco). Likened to Roger Hayden.

Geelong

Off:

Nathan Ablett - retired, for now.

Brent Prismall - traded to Essendon for draft pick 39.

Jason Davenport - delisted. Drafted by Port Adelaide.

On:

Mitchell Brown (Mentone Grammar, draft pick 15). Key forward who moved into draft contention after growing 7cm in 2008 and having a storming finish to the TAC Cup season - Sandringham Dragons called him up mid-year after he bagged 18 goals in three games for Mentone Grammar.

Tom Gillies (Dandenong Stingrays, draft pick 33). Tall backman who excels in one-on-one contests and has good speed over 20m. "We saw him play full-back on a number of fantastic full-forwards this year and do a good job," said Pu55y recruiter Stephen Wells.

Steven Motlop (Wanderers (NT), draft pick 39). "I'm happy we got a Motlop," quoth Cat supporter John Harms. Steven is Daniel's brother and a similarly gifted forward at a comparable age, booted 5 goals in National U16 Grand Final for NT at the MCG. Still only 17 and had shoulder operation recently, so will need time. Cats have some.

Taylor Hunt (Beaumaris, draft pick 49). Racehorse back-flanker who likes to carry the ball, has decent endurance too. Played for Vic Metro in 2008 National U18s. "Could prove one of the draft's steals," reckons Age's Quayle.

Rookie list

Shane Mumford (Bunyip / Geelong (VFL)). Second year on, a ruckman who played 3 games in 2008.

Brodie Moles (Tassie Mariners). Second year on, no senior games.

Jeremy Laidler (Calder Cannons). Second year on, yet to debut.

Adam Varcoe (Central District). Travis's brother.

Bryn Weadon (North Ballarat Rebels).

Tom Allwright (North Hobart).

Ranga Ediriwickrama (Pennant Hills).

Hawthorn

Off:

Shane Crawford - retired

Tim Clarke - delisted

Zac Dawson - delisted. Rookie-drafted by St. Kilda.

Garry Moss - demoted to rookie list

Luke McEntee - delisted

On:

Cameron Stokes (Rookie list / Darwin). Pacy, smart small forward played 9 games in 2008, including a final against the Bullies.

Ryan Schoenmakers (Tea Tree Gully / Norwood, draft pick 16). Strong-marking, long-kicking tall bloke who played as a forward for SA U18s and Norwood reserves. Showed great speed, spring and endurance at draft camp. Likened to Ryan O'Keefe, whom the Hawks failed to lure from Siddey. Hawks plan to make Schoenmakers a defender and "he could play senior footy this year," reckons Hork list-manager Chris Pelchen.

Liam Shiels (Boronia, draft pick 34). The youngest player drafted, he's a tough midfielder with good kicking skills. Had a great 2008 for TAC Cup club Eastern Ranges and played for Vic Metro, impressed Hawks in an AIS trial. Given his age, Shiels needs a year or two in junior ranks still, Hawks reckon.

Jordan Lisle (Carey Grammar, draft pick 50). Tall kid who's the son of former Kangaroo ruckman Mark Lisle. Jordan's a strong-marking, competitive type who can play at either end but the Orcs see him as another key defensive prospect alongside Schoenmakers. Represented Vic Metro in 2008 National U18s and won All-Australian selection.

Luke Lowden (Sandringham Dragons, draft pick 63). Stringbean 204cm ruckman with limited football experience. 'Project player' for the Hawks who have a few ruckmen now.

Shane Savage (Dandenong Stingrays, draft pick 75). Described as a composed, ball-winning midfielder with decent pace and skills, tested well for agility at draft camp.

Rookie list

Tim Walsh (Port Adelaide Magpies). Second year on.

Riley Milne (Murray Bushrangers).

Haydn Kiel (Brisbane). Midfielder was on Lions' rookie list 2007-8, no senior experience.

Luke Breust (Temora).

Carl Peterson (Richmond). Athletic forward-flanker was on Tiges' senior list 2006-7. No senior games.

Garry Moss.

Matthew Suckling (Hawthorn). Re-drafted for a third year as  rookie.

Will Sierakowski (Riverview). Scholarship player.

Melbourne

Off:

David Neitz - retired

Ben Holland - retired

Adem Yze - delisted

Jeff White - delisted

Chris Johnson - delisted (refused new contract), drafted by Carlton.

Jace Bode - delisted

Isack Weetra - delisted

On:

Austin Wonaeamirri (Rookie list / St. Mary's (NT)). 'Livewire' forward pocket was a find for the Deez in a miserable last year, bagging 24 goals in 18 games and having some impressive stints midfield. A new cult figure for Dee fans after departures of Neita, 'Ooz' et al. Wonna needs to watch his weight, though.

Jack Watts (Sandringham Dragons, draft pick 1). Super-athletic, gifted spearhead was unknown at the start of 2008 but gave up basketball to focus on footy. Dominated 2008 National U18s, winning Larke Medal for best player in the tournament. Exceptional speed and endurance for his size and has good footy brain - a new Neitz. But school (Year 12) will occupy much of 2009.

Sam Blease (Eastern Ranges, draft pick 17). Skinny midfielder whose chief benefit is his ball-use - disposes with great skill and nous, apparently. Played for Vic Metro in National U18s, averaged a modest 10 touches per game. Like Watts, will study in 2009.

James Strauss (Scotch College, draft pick 19). Another midfielder with great kicking skills - the Dees were keen on those. Strauss is also quick and agile, tested very well for speed and endurance at draft camp. Vic Metro rep in 2008, averaged 13 possies per game.

Jamie Bennell (Bunbury / Swan Districts, draft pick 35). Rover with pace and clean disposal skills. Rated very highly by Swan Districts folk, whose club supplied a lot of draftees last year.

Neville Jetta (Carey Park / Swan Districts, draft pick 51). Skilful, ball-winning winger or forward-flanker. Played for WA in 2008 National U18s, averaged 13 disposals per game. Impressive pre-season efforts for the Dees this year. Dunno his relation to the Bommers' Jetta.

Rohan Bail (Mt. Gravatt, draft pick 64). Fast, aggressive winger and a bit older than the other Dee draftees at 20. Did pre-season with St. Kilda 2 years ago, last year he booted 4 goals and was BOG in Mt. Gravatt's Quaffle Grand Final win.

Liam Jurrah (Yuendumu Magpies, pre-season draft pick 1). Tall, skinny forward who impressed with the VFL Magpies last year. Bit of a surprise pick, doesn't speak English too well apparently.

Rookie list

Shane Valenti (Sandringham (VFL)). Rugged rover, played 9 senior games in 2008.

Trent Zomer (Eastern Ranges). Second year on, no senior games as yet.

Jake Spencer (Redlands). Second year on, no senior games.

Jordie McKenzie (Geelong Falcons).

Rhys Healey (Bendigo Pioneers).

Danny Hughes (Melbourne). On Dees' rookie list 2006-7, no senior games.

North Melbourne

Off:

Shannon Grant - retired

Jess Sinclair - retired

Nathan Thompson - retired

Leigh Brown - delisted. Drafted by Collingwood.

Ed Sansbury - delisted

Ben Davies - delisted

Blake Grima - delisted

On:

Nathan Grima (Rookie list / Central District). A tall defender and brother of the delisted Blake, Nathan did his knee in 2008 pre-season and missed the year, hasn't played a senior game yet so Ruse must rate him.

Michael Wundke (Rookie list / North Adelaide). Tall forward with excellent goal-scoring record at junior level, kicked 44 goals in the VFL for North Ballarat last year. No senior games for Wundke as yet.

Jack Ziebell (Wodonga, draft pick 9). Versatile midfielder who's been compared with Hawk Luke Hodge - very competitive in the contest, a great kick, makes very good decisions and can play just about anywhere. Has leadership qualities which were recognized at the AIS/AFL Academy and had an excellent 2008 National U18s for Vic Country. Only downside is constant raving from w@nker of a manager, Liam Pickering.

Sam Wright (Katamatite, draft pick 27). Forward-flanker with dinner-plate hands, otherwise looks identical to Pie metrosexual Dale Thomas. Not surprisingly Wright can take a mark, also has some pace and agility. Started his TAC Cup year (for Murray Bushrangers) as a leading forward but also impressed later as a half-back. "He's got a bit of class," said Roo recruiter Bryce Lewis.

Liam Anthony (East Fremantle, draft pick 43). Mature, 21-year-old ruck-rover with good speed and skills, finished second in East Freo's senior B&F last year. A ready-to-go midfielder, you'd think, and prominent pre-season performances support that.

Nathan O'Keefe (Kilburn / North Adelaide, draft pick 59). A late-blooming tall bloke who played very well as a key forward for SA in National U18s, was an All-Aussie, also played senior footy for North Adelaide in 2008. And in the TAC Cup for Eastern Ranges, somehow. These websites confuse me.

Warren Benjamin (Claremont, draft pick 71). Lightening-quick, strong-bodied midfielder excelled for Claremont Colts in 2008, also played 2 senior games. "Brother of Carlton's Clinton," says The Age, not realizing he'd been delisted.

Rookie list.

Cruize Garlett (Perth). Second year on, no senior games yet.

Marcus White (Calder Cannons).

Luke Delaney (Geelong Falcons).

Benjamin Speight (Norwood).

Alan Obst (North Melbourne). Re-drafted for second year on, looked promising in 3 games last year, a punctured lung interrupting his season.

Connor Meredith (Laois, Ireland). International rookie.

Port Adelaide

Off:

Michael Wilson - retired

Hugh Minson - retired

Adam Thomson - traded to Richmond for draft pick 42.

Nathan Lonie - delisted

Damon White - delisted

Greg Bentley - delisted. Rookie-drafted by Carlton.

Fabian Deluca - delisted

Adam Cockshell - delisted

Ryan Williams - delisted

On:

Nick Salter (Rookie list / Woodville - West Torrens). Long-kicking forward made an impression in debut game against St. Kilda last year, before being KO'ed by Koschitzke.

Hamish Hartlett (Edwardstown / West Adelaide, draft pick 4). Clear-out for Port who now have a very young list. Hartlett, brother of always-injured Bloo Adam, is a gifted, natural midfielder. Starring in 2008 National U18s for SA (avg 16 disposals and a goal per game, All-Australian), Hartlett also won Sheehan Medal in 2007 for best player in Australia at U16 level. Made senior debut for West Adelaide last year.

Jackson Trengove (Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School, draft pick 22). Expected to go in the first round, so Port were very happy Trengove slipped through to the second. He's an aggressive big man with great athleticism and speed. "The sort of bloke you'd put on Buddy Franklin, and he'd love it," commented AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan. Made 2008 Vic Metro squad but tore hamstring badly in first game, allegedly recovered okay. Also fined by Port after drink-related 'incident' this pre-season.

Matthew Broadbent (Henley / Woodville-West Torrens, draft pick 38). Hard-running, long kicking half-back impressed for SA in National U18s, also played 11 senior games in Snaffle for West Adelaide in 2008. 'Excellent athletic profile', says AwFuL website.

Mitchell Banner (Werribee Junior, draft pick 42). Small rover but a tough in-and-under ball-winner who collected B&F for TAC Cup club Western Jets in 2007 as a 17-year-old. Last year played for Vic Metro in National U18s and averaged 18 disposals per game, including big one against WA. He'd feed it out to Hartlett.

Jarrad Redden (Woodville-West Torrens, draft pick 58). 202 cm, 17-y-o tap-ruckman who impressed in 2008 National U18s for SA.

Glen Dawson (Woodville-West Torrens, draft pick 66). Speedy, springheeled half-forward with a decent kick off either foot. SA U18 rep in 2008 but didn't do much.

Jason Davenport (Geelong, draft pick 78). Port suck the meat off the bones of the draft, as usual. Davenport's a 23-y-o, muscular midfielder who starred at VFL level for the Cats but wasn't been able to crack the senior team. Port'll give him an early chance, no doubt.

Josh Carr (Fremantle, pre-season draft pick 2). Carr flagged his desire to return to Port at the end of last season; his partner's from Adelaide and his brother Matthew's retirement meant Josh no longer had a reason (as far as he was concerned) for staying with the Dokkers. Aged 28 and with just under 200 games to his credit, should add some grunt to midfield.

Rookie list

Wade Thompson (North Adelaide). Key forward who impressed in NAB Cup.

Danny Meyer (Richmond). Talented type who struggled with injury and form in 4 years and 17 games with the Tiges.

Daniel Stewart (Labrador).

Matthew Martin (West Adelaide).

Jesse Laurie (Claremont).

Richmond

Off:

Greg Tivendale - retired

David Gourdis - demoted to rookie list

Chris Hyde - delisted

Danny Meyer - delisted. Rookie-drafted by Port.

Travis Casserley - delisted

On:

Adam Thomson (Port Adelaide). Stat-winning rover who was a first-round draft pick in 2004 but struggled for a game with Port, 28 in the four years. Smells of a 'revenge trade' for Rodan.

Tyrone Vickery (Haileybury College, draft pick 8). Tiges went light in one of the most touted drafts in years. Vickery is a strong-marking, aggressive forward or ruckman with great decision-making, apparently. Played well in National U18s GF for Vic Metro v WA with 6 marks and 3 goals from the ruck, made All-Aussie team. His Dad, who played a handful of games for Collywood in the early 70s, is Richmond's fitness coach.

Jayden Post (Western Jets, draft pick 26). Centre half-back and 'a marking machine', apparently, but his kicking needs work. Led TAC Cup marking stats, 50 ahead of the second bloke, pulled down 18 grabs and had 35 disposals in a TAC Cup final and won the Jets' B&F in 2008.

Tom Hislop (Essendon, draft pick 58). Muscular, hard-hitting midfielder or defender delisted by the Bommers after 2 years there, for "repeated disciplinary breaches". Seems a bit of a nutter all-round but showed some ability in 7 senior appearances and Tiges reckon they can 'tame' him. "We liked him a lot in the '06 draft, we just think he gives us a bit of grunt and strength to our midfield," says Tigger recruiter Francis Jackson.

Ben Cousins (Port Melbourne, pre-season draft pick 6). What was that about repeated disciplinary breaches? In a poorly organized, apparently supporter-driven move, the Tiges were the unlikely purchasers of the leeg's most infamous substance abuser. The bigger issue may be Cuz is 30+ and has a recent history of hamstring trouble, on top of not playing for a year. Could be very handy if he stays fit and off the gear. Those ifs should be upper case, in a much larger font.

Rookie list

Jarrod Silvester (Coburg). Second year on, no senior games as yet.

Robin Nahas (Port Melbourne). 21-y-o rover who's very small, but speedy.

David Gourdis.

Andrew Browne (Murray Bushrangers). 205 cm, 105 kg, 18-y-o ruckman.

Alroy Gilligan (Claremont). Small forward.

St. Kilda

Off:

Robert Harvey - retired

Fraser Gehrig - retired

Aaron Fiora - delisted

Charlie Gardiner - delisted

Shane Birss - delisted

Matthew Ferguson - delisted

Michael Rix - delisted

Brad Howard - demoted to rookie list.

On:

Farren Ray (Footscray). Skilful running midfielder but a bit of a softy receiver who wanted to quit the Dogs after falling from favour with Eade. Strange pick-up for the Saints, probably they see his running power as an asset. A Fiora replacement.

Robert Eddy (Rookie list / Gippsland Power). Tough half-forward who can take a grab, Eddy debuted last season and played 13 games including all three of Saints' finals. Maybe a midfielder in time.

Andrew McQualter (Rookie list). Rover who was a first-round draft pick for the Saints in 2004 but struggled with consistency and for a regular game before being 'demoted' at end of 2007. Played 12 games as a rookie last year, most of 'em as a tagger.

Tom Lynch (Haileybury College, draft pick 13). The Stainers' drafting was all about who they didn't pick - Ben Cousins, strung along for a few months before being ruled out the day before the draft. Ah well. Lynch is a ginger-nut, lead-up key forward from a family of committed Sinkilda supporters. Captained his school team and co-skippered Vic Metro in 2008, showed impressive endurance and speed at draft camp.

Rhys Stanley (West Adelaide, draft pick 47). 'Developing' ruckman who came to prominence in National U18s, where he showed ability to run and tackle as well as tap and mark. Played a coupla senior games for West Adelaide in 2008. Limited footy experience due to basketball, of course. "A nice pick," says Quayle.

Nicholas Heyne (Orbost-Snowy Rovers, draft pick 48). Lightly-built but athletic wingman who bagged 37 goals in 2008 TAC Cup season with Gippsland Power, fourth-best in the comp. Has raking left boot, apparently.

Alistair Smith (Northam / Perth, draft pick 62). Pacy midfielder recruited more on athletic ability than performance, it would seem. Did play for WA U18s in 2008, though.

Paul Cahill (Mitcham Hawks / Sturt, draft pick 74). The Stainers plumbed the depths of the draft - still no room for Cuz here, though. Cahill is a mobile key forward who did well for SA in 2008 National U18s.

Colm Begley (Brisbane, draft pick 83). Useful, Ireland-born running defender harshly delisted by the Lyin's, although his disposal (decision-making rather than skill) can be ordinary. Injuries didn't help his 2008 either, deserved another chance.

Rookie list.

Luke Miles (Swan Districts). Second year on.

Khan Haretuku (University of NSW). Second year on.

Zac Dawson (Hawthorn). Full back (in)famous for being taken apart by Anthony Rocca in 2007. Never really came back from that.

Tom Simpkin (Geelong Falcons).

Brad Howard.

Stephen Gaertner (Dandenong Stingrays).

Ross Tungatulum (St. Mary's (NT)).

Sam McGarry (Sandringham Dragons).

Blake McGrath (Pennant Hills). Scholarship player, a 208 cm ruckman.

Sydney

Off:

Tadhg Kennelly - retired to play Gaelic football back home.

Ben Mathews - retired

Nic Fosdike - retired

Peter 'Spida' Everitt - retired

Nick Davis - delisted

Luke Brennan - delisted

Kristin Thornton - demoted to rookie list

Peter Faulks - delisted

On:

Rhyce Shaw (Collingwood). Speedy rebounding defender best-remembered for 2003 Grand Final 'choke'. Had a reasonable season in 2008 but probably tired of being a regular Pie scapegoat, especially for the Porky Pie incident in which he was barely involved.

Nick Smith (Rookie list / Norwood). Tallish midfielder debuted round 5 v Geelong last year and managed one other game later in the season, against the Awks. Tough asks.

Matthew O'Dwyer (Rookie list / Calder Cannons). Born and raised in Sydney, but recruited from Calder. He's a running midfielder who played two senior games late last season.

Lewis Johnston (Port Pirie Bulldogs / North Adelaide, draft pick 12). Only three picks for the ageing Swans, which seemed a waste of this alleged super-draft. Johnston is a very talented key forward, led the 2008 National U18s in contested marks and third in marks overall, also a quick, straight lead and has a big leap. Go box, Barry.

Daniel Hannebery (Xavier College, draft pick 30). Courageous midfielder with outstanding endurance. Also says "high possession-winner" here but he averaged only 10 touches a game for Vic Metro in National U18s. Lotsa rotation there, no doubt.

Campbell Heath (Gippsland Power, draft pick 61). Decent back-flanker who played modestly for Vic Country in National U18s. Swans recruiter Stu Maxfield reckons they picked Heath because he was amongst the best 17-year-olds in the draft.

Rookie list

Brendan Murphy (County Carlow, Ireland). International rookie, second year on.

Jake Orreal (Nowhere). Second year on.

Kristin Thornton.

Taylor Gilchrist (Sandringham Dragons).

Kyle Coney (Tyrone, Ireland). International rookie.

Mike Pyke (Canada). International rookie, former rugby international who scored a famous try v the All Blacks in 2007 World Cup. Impressed in the ruck in pre-season.

West Coast:

Off:

Michael Braun - retired

Jaymie Graham - retired

Steven Armstrong - delisted

Chad Jones - delisted

James Thomson - delisted

On:

Beau Wilkes (Rookie list / Claremont). Defender who found himself a regular starter in the Weegs' injury-plagued 2008, playing 14 games.

Nick Naitanui (Midvale / Swan Districts, draft pick 2). Considered likely no. 1 pick before emergence of Watts for the Deez, the 201cm Naitanui (he's got a Fijian background) is a ridiculously athletic ruckman with a terrific mop of dreadlocks. Brilliant at the last two National U18s, in 2008 he led hit-outs, was second in pack-clearances and hard-ball gets and third in tackles - pretty impressive. Played first ruck in Swans' losing Waffle GF team. Knee injury suffered in pre-season will delay his debut.

Luke Shuey (Marcellin College, draft pick 18). Speedy rover, a clearance-specialist who can also go forward and lurk a goal. Played for Vic Metro in 2008 National U18s, averaging 18 disposals per game.

Tom Swift (Swanbourne / Claremont, draft pick 20). Brilliant ball-winning midfielder at U16 level but knee injuries cruelled his last two seasons. Rebounded from those at 2008 draft camp, where he displayed outstanding endurance and speed. "Has enormous potential," says Emma Quayle.

Ashley Smith (Berwick, draft pick 36). Officially the fastest player (over 20m) at the 2008 draft camp, he's a midfielder with a long kick too. Vic Metro rep in 2008, averaged 11 disposals. Was suggested as a first-round pick prior to draft.

Jordan Jones (Ocean Grove, draft pick 52). Tall defender with decent leap and mobility. Played for Vic Country in 2008 National U18s.

Rookie list.

Ryan Davis (NSW-ACT Rams). Second year on for the lithe flanker, played 11 games last year and bagged 4 goals.

Lewis Stevenson (Claremont). Second year on, no senior games as yet.

Ashley Arrowsmith (East Keilor). Second year on, no senior games.

William Sullivan (Western Jets). Second year on, no senior games.

Callum Wilson (South Fremantle). Second year on, no senior games.

Liam Bedford (Geelong). Two years on Cats' rookie list, no senior games.

Adam Cockie (Subiaco).

Cheers, Tim.
